Fairtrade Christmas

You may have noticed an upswing in the number of people searching for sustainable options (especially around Christmas time) which has resulted in more people than ever before opting for Fairtrade!

Why have a Fairtrade Christmas? 🤔

The people who grow the things we love to eat, drink and wear deserve to be paid fairly for their work 👩‍🌾 With a stable income, they can invest in their communities and break the cycle of poverty.

Through Fairtrade, farmers have the chance to educate their children, improve their housing 🏠 and invest in clean water 💧 to keep their community healthy. Fairtrade can transform whole communities, but only if enough people choose to support it where they can.

What difference does Fairtrade make? 🤔

Economic Benefits: The Fairtrade minimum price is a safety net that supports farmers to become more income-secure and less vulnerable to poverty. They also earn a Fairtrade Premium to invest into projects of their choice. Fairtrade is gradually empowering communities to organise into co-operatives and improve their negotiating position within the supply chain. This can enable them to negotiate a higher price for their product than the conventional market price.

Environmental Benefits: The Fairtrade Standards cover key areas for environmental protection, including energy use, soil 🌱 and water quality 💧 biodiversity protection, prohibition of genetically modified organisms and harmful chemicals, and waste management. The standards promote training for farmers including advice on switching to environmentally friendly practices.

Consumer Awareness: 9 in 10 UK consumers recognise the Fairtrade mark. 85% of British consumers trust the Fairtrade mark. 70% who have seen the Fairtrade mark would recommend it to friends.

Social Benefits: Fairtrade farmers and workers often feel a real sense of control over their future with greater power and stronger voice. Fairtrade can provide producer support and expertise in deepening gender equality. Fairtrade can support workers to realise their rights and negotiate the terms and conditions of their work through trade unions collective bargaining. Workers on Fairtrade certified plantations highly value the investments they make through the Fairtrade Premium in education, housing, schools and medical facilities for their communities.
